Heartgard for Cats: What You Need to Know

Those furry balls we call pet cats could get sick, too. Because you can not always see what your pet cat eats and where they go to play, they also have the tendency of having parasites inside their bodies. Not to worry because these could be treated with Heartgard for cats.

Heartgard for cats is a chewable oral parasiticide that contains 55 or 165 mcg of Ivermectin. It prevents heartworm diseases and for the removal and control of adult and immature hookworms such as Ancylostoma tubaeforme and A. braziliense in cats. It can prevent heartworm diseases through stopping the tissue stage of the heartworm larvae(Dirofilaria immitis) for a month after infection.

The Heartgard for cats should be fed to the cat orally once in a month. The ideal minimum dosage is 24 mcg for every kilogram or 10.9 mcg/lb of the cat’s weight. This is to ensure that heartworm diseases will be prevented and the adult and immature hookworms will surely be removed and controlled. For ease and convenience, a cat weighing up to 5 lbs should be given 55mcg of the Ivermectin Heartgard for cats and those cats weighing more than 5 lbs up to 15 lbs should be given 165mcg of the Ivermectin Heartgard for cats. If your cat weighs more than 15 lbs, add the appropriate dosage based on the computation of 10.0mcg/lb.

The Heartgard for cats should be administered only to those cats which are 6 weeks of age and older. Anything less than that, you should consult your veterinarian. This is a prescription drug and the law prohibits use without the proper prescription of the veterinarian.

The Heartgard for cats can be fed through breaking it into small pieces. This will increase the absorbability of the medicine. After breaking it into pieces, place it on your hands or mix it with the cat’s meal. Make sure that the cat is able to eat everything and has not ejected some after a few minutes. If the cat was not able to eat it all or has thrown up some of it, give another dose to it.

Open only the pack of one chewable when you need it and get only that which you need. After which, store the whole pack to a place where children could not reach it. It is better to store it under temperatures of 30 degrees Celcius resulting to longer years that could span up to two years.
