Cats are irreplaceable and you would never want to miss a single purr of your cat, but heartworm disease can cause fatal conditions for your feline including sudden death. Feline heartgard is a medication used to protect your cat from the fatal stages of heartworm disease so that your cat may live out its nine lives.

Heartworm larva is being transmitted through mosquitoes, so the protection with feline heartgard should start in the beginning of the mild season. You can put your cat under feline heartgard medication with or without a check-up by your veterinarian, but you still need a prescription for the drug from your vet. Unlike dogs, cats can receive the heartworm disease medication at any time of the heartworm stage.

Feline heartgard is available as tablet and as chewable and you should give your cat a tablet one day in a month for a year or longer. The day should always be the same each month if possible because delayed administration can cause minimized effects of the drug. Feline heartgard works a little different in cats than it works in dogs, because the medicine kills off both growing and grown heartworms and other worms such as hookworms. The feline heartgard medication does have side-effects especially when there is an overdose in your cat. The side effects have been reported to be less than 0.3 % with cases of diarrhea and vomiting.

The real problem of feline heartworm infections is not the worm itself but the amount of worms and the size. The arteries and veins of a cat are considerably smaller than one in a dog and thus only a maximum number of 3 heartworms can safely reside within the cat’s body. If however a worm dies within the body of the cat, fatal reactions can follow depending on the cat. Since the dead worm clogs the arteries and the veins, blood cannot flow freely or the dead worm can form reactions in the lung. The worst cases of dead worms resulted in sudden death of the cat. You can avoid a sudden death of your cat by using feline heartgard.

The feline heartgard medication is available at your vet, at a pet shop or online if you would like to order. There are two different doses; one for cats below 5 pounds and another dosage for cats ranging from 5 pounds to 15 pounds. Choose the right protection for your cat and choose feline heartgard.
