Worms are a danger to many creatures on earth. Parasitic in nature, these worms can easily rob a creature of vital nutrients and strength, turning them into shadows of their former selves. Your puppies and dogs could rapidly become listless and weak and your cats might stop being so cuddly. Luckily, Heartgard is a drug that can prevent infection of one of the more dangerous examples of dog or cat infecting worms – the Heartworm. These worms can make your association with your chosen pet shorter than you’d ever want.

Worms have always been trouble, but with the advance of science, its trouble that can easily be controlled, though never truly exterminated. Heartgard is a fine example of that control and denial, as it was made specifically to combat the Heartworm. This kind of worm gets its name by living in your pet’s heart for most of its life cycle. Dogs, unfortunately, do not combat this threat as well as a cat would, as the a dog can have thousands of this worm while the cat only has two to five of them, as it is able to fend it off to greater effect. Despite this, Heartgard remains a vital drug as even one worm can cause serious damage and even kill your pet.

Fortunately, Heartgard acts as a prophylactic, or something that is taken regularly to make sure that the infection never even takes place, rather than method of treating worms. Dogs, again, tend to react negatively to Heargard if they are already infected, though cats can take it whether the worm is present or not. This is why Heartgard is a prescription only drug and responsible vets will put your animal through thorough testing before giving you the prescription. There is another version of Heartgard, Heartgard Plus, which takes care of other worms as well, making it a well rounded drug.

Generally, Heartgard is taken once a month as a bite sized snack for your pets and in an amount that corresponds with their age. The drug should be treated with care and respect, as while even sensitive dog breeds will be able to take this drug, taking too much of it can easily be fatal to your favorite companion. Used properly however, Heartgard has been approved by various government agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency.

Take care of your pets and they will be around for you to cherish for a long, long time.
