Heartgard plus does not cure the heartworm disease, but it rather prevents the development of an already present heartworm larva. Heartgard plus stops the development so that the larva cannot reach adulthood which means they cannot reproduce. It is reproduction of worms that make worm diseases so fatal for the animal because if more worms are present, more nutrients are being taken by these parasites. If however your dog or cat is already diagnosed with an adult stage of heartworm disease, you should get every string pulled to have it removed as soon as possible, because heartgard plus chewables can only prevent and not treat.
