Heartgard Plus is one product that veterinarians use and recommend as protection for dogs against heartworms hookworms and other ailments. However, before administering it, you should be aware of its possible side effects.

The Heartgard side effects vary not just among dogs and cats, but also the weight and general health status of the animal. It is thus essential that you follow the direction explicitly. If you give higher dosages to your dog it might get adversely affected.

Symptoms of Heartgard side effects (brought about by an overdose), include physical trembling, unexplained loss of body weight, vomiting, loose bowel movement, lack of balance and coordination (similar to distemper) and if the overdose is extensive, can lead to death.

Special attention should be paid to the dispensation of the medicine to collie breeds (or hybrids involving this dog). It can be used on them but you have to be very careful especially if you want to give large doses. This drug should not be handed to any dogs or cats below 6 weeks of age.

In cats, the Heartgard side effects, also stemming from an inappropriate administration of the chewables, include blindness, irritation, and the aforementioned diarrhea and dilation of pupils.

Aside from conforming to the direction as prescribed in the product, there are additional measures that you can undertake to prevent any Heartgard side effects from occurring. Chief among them is to conduct a test on the dog or cat for the presence of heartworm, hookworm or roundworms prior to giving it the chewables. This being a preventive medicine, one should have the animal examined beforehand.

Another important factor to consider is the environment. Heartworms and their kin thrive in sullied places so make sure that the dog or cat is kept clean, and also its location. The owner must also practice good hygiene for hookworms can be contracted by humans.

Some of the Heartgard side effects are brought about by not properly maintaining and storing the product itself. Do not remove all the chewables from the wrapper; only take the one that will be administered for this month. Once you have given the medicine, close the package. Do not store in a cold place; keep it at room temperature.

To prevent any other Heartgard side effect it should again be emphasized that you follow the direction for use. For example, regardless of the size of the pets, the chewable should be given only once a month; you should pay attention to the correct amount of pyramtel and ivermectin.

By following all the instructions and taking the necessary protection, your pet will be in good hands.
